Reference Library for diagnosis-first practice

This library is where we keep the “small but useful” materials: definitions, test sequences, and checklists you can keep beside your desk. It is written to support deliberate practice, not to replace it—short references you can use while you work through modules.

Core references (useful in almost every session)

These are the references we reach for repeatedly while designing practice loops. They are intentionally plain: definitions that avoid style wars, checklists that prevent confusion, and small tests that isolate a cause. If you keep one printout beside you, make it one of these.

The “Two Lines, One Change” protocol

A small experimental habit that keeps your conclusions honest. You write two short sets of the same stroke family. Between the sets, you change exactly one variable and record it. This avoids the common trap of “adjust everything” and then not knowing which change caused improvement or a new defect.

In practice, the one change might be: ink dilution ratio, paper swap, nib cleaning, tine alignment, or a specific pressure ramp cue. The point is repeatability.

Ink dilution shorthand

A practical way to record “how thin” your ink is so you can reproduce it. The library uses ratio notation and small swatch tests rather than brand-specific recipes.

Spacing measurement cues

A small list of cues that keep spacing consistent: counter-space comparisons, anchor marks, and quick checks that do not interrupt flow.

Nib inspection: alignment before pressure

A short checklist for tine alignment and debris that can make a good session feel “mysteriously bad.” The emphasis is order: inspect and clean before changing your hand. If a nib is misaligned, no amount of calm breathing will restore clean hairlines.

Dry time notes

A consistent way to record dry time across papers so smudges are predictable, not surprising.

Terminology, defined for practice

Definitions here are written for one purpose: to help you spot a defect and describe it accurately. If a term is debated in style communities, we pick the version that supports measurement and repeatable tests. That keeps the library calm and usable.

Railroading

A shaded stroke splits into two parallel lines with a pale channel between them. In practice, this is a sign of ink starvation at the tine gap. It often shows up on slow curves because the nib stays open longer and needs a steadier ink supply.

Diagnostic hint: check ink load and dilution first, then inspect tine alignment. Only after those are stable should you change pressure technique.

Feathering

Ink spreads into paper fibers and creates soft, fuzzy edges. The underlying cause is usually paper absorbency and sizing, but ink dilution can amplify it. A useful distinction: feathering is an edge behavior; blobs are volume and pooling behavior.

Diagnostic hint: swap to a known smooth, well-sized paper (even a single sheet) and repeat the same stroke set. If feathering disappears, paper was the primary variable.

Hairline recovery

What happens immediately after you release pressure. A clean recovery returns to a thin line without a “tail blob,” a notch, or an abrupt width change. This is a practical marker for pressure control and for whether the nib snaps back evenly.

Diagnostic hint: run a pressure ladder—five strokes, each with a slightly longer pressure phase—then compare the recovery points. If the recovery fails only at higher pressure, reduce spread and check tine symmetry.

Counter-space

The enclosed or implied “inside” space of a letterform. Consistent counter-space is what makes a word look even at a glance. In practice, you can compare counters as shapes rather than as distances: if two counters feel different, spacing will feel lumpy even if measurements look similar.

Diagnostic hint: mark tiny anchor points at the widest parts of common counters (o, a, d) and compare them across a word. This is faster than measuring every gap.

Baseline drift

When letterforms gradually rise or fall across a word or line, even when you intend to stay level. Drift is often subtle on single letters and obvious on long words. It is influenced by guideline visibility, arm movement, and where you “aim” your exit strokes.

Diagnostic hint: write a long word twice: once with strong baseline lines, once with a faint baseline. If drift increases on the faint line, the fix is visual structure before technique tweaks.

Turn a vague defect into a clean test
