Practice Modules

This catalogue is built like a workshop notebook: each module contains a short setup, a limited set of repetitions, a scenario prompt, and a re-test. The goal is controlled change—one variable at a time—so your notes stay reliable across paper batches, ink recipes, and nib wear.

The modules are educational content only. They are not a certification pathway, and they do not promise outcomes beyond what careful practice can realistically deliver. If you want a starting order, use the contact form at the end of this page and tell us your materials and what you’re observing.

Module catalogue (12)

Every module includes: setup notes, a tight repetition set, a scenario prompt, and a short re-test. You do not need special equipment to begin; when a module benefits from a specific tool (for example, comparing papers with different sizing), it offers a simpler alternative so you can still learn the decision process.

Module 01

Materials Baseline: paper, ink, nib

Build a repeatable baseline so later diagnostics are trustworthy. You create a short swatch protocol: two straight shades, two hairlines, and one compound curve, repeated across a small dilution ladder. The output is a “known good” reference for your current paper and ink.

Stroke Diagnostics: five-variable triage

Learn the order that prevents guesswork: paper sizing and tooth, ink viscosity and load, tine alignment, pressure ramp, then speed. You practise describing defects with precise language (starvation, railroading, feathering, pooling) and selecting one controlled test.

Module 03

Guidelines Setup: baseline, x-height, slant

Set guidelines that carry information, not decoration. You practise a fast “drift test” for long words and a slant stability check using anchor marks. The module also covers common traps: over-rotating the page, inconsistent x-height due to wrist travel, and slant creep during slow shades.

Module 04

Spacing Control: counters, joins, word rhythm

Train your eye for counter-space (the inside gaps) and for the negative space between letters. Instead of writing full alphabets, you practise paired shapes and mark “anchor widths” so spacing becomes measurable. The scenarios cover short words where spacing issues are most visible.

Module 05

Ink Behavior Lab: flow, feathering, dry time

Run small, repeatable experiments around viscosity and absorbency. You learn to separate edge feathering (paper + ink interaction) from line spread caused by pressure. The module also covers “pause blobs” and why they happen: ink load, dwell time, and re-start pressure.

Module 06

Pressure Mapping: shade width and recovery

Build a consistent pressure ramp without crushing the nib. You practise a “pressure ladder” and measure shade width within a small tolerance band. The scenario prompts focus on recovery: when hairlines don’t return cleanly after a shaded stroke, what do you change first?

Module 07

Entry and Exit Strokes: clean starts, clean lifts

Many “messy” pages are actually a start/stop problem. This module isolates the first 5 mm and the last 5 mm of a stroke: preventing entry blobs, keeping a clean exit hairline, and avoiding a tail that hooks. Scenarios include pauses, re-inking, and restarting on a curve.

Nib Alignment and Maintenance: tine symmetry

A practical module for diagnosing problems that look like “technique,” but are actually tool geometry. You learn a quick symmetry check, how to spot catching on upstrokes, and how nib wear changes line character over time. The emphasis is observation and safe handling, not aggressive adjustments.

Module 09

Oval Consistency: compound curves without wobble

Ovals reveal everything: slant drift, speed changes, and uneven pressure. This module breaks the oval into segments and teaches a measured rhythm for compound curves. Scenario prompts ask you to distinguish wobble caused by speed from wobble caused by pressure transitions.

Module 10

Hairline Discipline: line economy and angle

Hairlines are not “free.” This module teaches how nib angle, speed, and pressure release interact, and how hairlines can start to thicken as ink load changes. Scenarios focus on diagnosing when a thick hairline is actually a dragging issue from paper tooth.

Word Assembly: joins, spacing, and pacing

Move from isolated strokes to readable words without losing control. You learn a simple pacing rule (where to slow down and where to keep momentum) and practise a “join inventory” so common letter connections stop surprising you. Scenarios include cramped words and over-stretched words.

Module 12

Troubleshooting Playbook: from defect to test

A capstone module built from common practice situations: “railroading appears only after ten strokes,” “feathering appears only on shaded curves,” “spacing looks uneven but letterforms are fine.” You practise writing a short hypothesis, choosing a single test, and recording outcomes as craft notes.

A practical way to track progress

Progress in calligraphy is easiest to see when you track the right thing. These modules intentionally avoid “finish a page” goals. Instead, you track variation: shade width spread, slant drift across a line, and how often an entry blob appears when you restart after a pause.

Each module includes a small log template you can copy into a notebook. The wording matters: “Feathering increased after dilution change” is a useful note; “bad today” is not. Over a few weeks, you end up with a materials map—paper sizing, ink ratio, nib condition—and you stop re-solving the same problem.

What to include for a useful reply

  • One defect you can reproduce on demand (for example, feathering on curves)
