A practice method built around diagnosis, not repetition for its own sake.

Calligraphy improves fastest when you can name a defect and test its cause. Vbg B.V. teaches a stable loop: set a narrow target, write a small set, diagnose what went wrong, change one variable, and re-test. It is methodical and a bit unglamorous, which is exactly why it works.

Rule of the method

Two sets, one change. If you change paper, ink, pressure, and speed at once, you cannot know which variable moved the result.

The method loop (used in every module)

The loop is designed to keep your attention on controllable variables. You will see the same vocabulary across modules: x-height, baseline, counter-space, hairline recovery, tine spread, railroading, feathering, and ink pooling. Consistency of wording is not pedantic; it makes your notes comparable across weeks.

    Define a target you can test

    Pick a single outcome you can observe without guessing. Examples: “keep shade width consistent within a half millimeter,” “avoid feathering at the curve apex,” or “hold slant steady across 12 letters.” A target is not a vibe. It is a check you can run after a short set of strokes.

    Write a small, comparable set

    Ten to twelve repetitions are enough if you stop and look closely. Keep the set comparable: same nib angle, same ink load routine, same guideline spacing. If you are practicing spacing, avoid full words at first; paired shapes (“o o”, “n n”, “m m”) make counter-space and rhythm easier to spot.

    Choose one: a stroke family (entry strokes, shaded ovals, compound curves) and a set size (8, 10, or 12). Write the rule you will hold constant.

    Diagnose using the triage order

    Diagnosis starts with naming the defect precisely, then testing causes in a stable order. Our default triage is: paper (sizing/tooth/absorbency), ink (viscosity/dilution/load), tool (tine alignment/nib condition), technique (pressure ramp/angle), speed (acceleration and pauses). The point is not to be “right” immediately; the point is to test the most likely cause without chasing noise.

    Re-test, then record the smallest useful note

    Re-test the same set after changing one variable. Then write a note that future-you can use: what defect moved, what stayed, and what you changed. Over time you build a personal materials map—what your ink does on each paper, how a given nib behaves when it starts to misalign, and which fixes actually work for your hand.

What to write down (a minimal log that stays useful)

Many practice logs fail because they ask for too much. Ours asks for only what supports repeatability. If you can repeat the setup, you can compare sessions. If you can compare sessions, you can learn faster without guessing.

A good note uses practitioner language: “hairline recovery delayed after pressure,” “tine spread uneven on downstroke,” “counter-space opened between n and o,” “baseline drift increased after 8 letters,” “railroading appears only on slow curves.” These phrases aren’t fancy; they point to a testable cause.

Five fields that matter

  • Setup: paper, nib, ink ratio (even “undiluted” counts).
  • Target: the single outcome you want to control.
  • Defect name: railroading, feathering, pooling, drift, spacing lump.
  • One change: what you changed and only that.
  • Result: what moved, what did not, and whether to keep the change.

Common “noise” to avoid

  • Changing two variables because the first change “felt small.”
  • Recording brand names but not the behavior (absorbent vs sized; thin vs viscous).
  • Practicing until fatigue changes your pressure ramp and speed without noticing.
  • Notes like “better” or “worse” without saying what changed on the page.
